Apachecon Day 5

This is the Mac computer lab they have set up. The Macs here all look pretty slick, and the flat panel screens are lovely, but up until today, pretty much no one used them. Everyone had their own laptops.

Here's BDF, quite pleased that I'm taking his picture.

I took a few pictures just to prove that we did indeed go to sessions every day. This was a keynote speech on security, that really had nothing at all to do with security. It was really just some guy who rambled on about how the world was changing, and open source people are like people during the Revolutionary War, and High School kids are Morons, because they don't know how to credit sources for things, and that's what makes them great pioneers for the New World that Open Source is going to bring about, and if you play the record backwards it says "John is dead". It could have been a better speech.

Here's the next session I went to, led by Doug Tidwell, the guy that led my tutorial. It was kind of a continuation/simpler version of the tutorial, so it made a lot more sense the second swing around.

We're all set to head off to Fremont Street.

And this is Fremont Street. It turned out to be kinda sleezier than the Strip, but still in the same "Neon Everything" kinda style.

The claim to fame of this place is the ceiling is supposed to be like a giant TV screen or something.

But when we got there, it was just kinda sitting there, doing nothing, like a lazy hippy.

But we spotted an Elvis, and he spotted me, and noted the camera, and gave a big smile and a wave.

When I was down in Austin visiting Serita, she brought me downtown and showed me this guy that made these pretty smazzy pictures using spray paint, carboard, and newspaper. They had a guy like that here at Fremont Street. The pictures he can whip out in about 10 minutes time are pretty amazing.

He had these already finished when we arrived.

And after a minute he had this... pretty much nothing so far.

He used some cardboard and made what looked to be clouds on the sides.

And with some newspaper pressed then pulled up, he made some rather impressive mountains.

Already the thing is looking pretty good.

BDF and I headed to Tony Romas for dinner. It was pretty much the only place that didn't have "topless" in the title somewhere. Our table was hidden in a cave, more or less.. and my booth ran directly into the wall. This picture doesn't capture it well, but they were the worst restaurant seats I've ever witnessed.

After dinner, we headed out, and shortly thereafter, the music started. The Ceiling lit up, and moved along to a number of Disco songs.

A Travolta-esque guy on the ceiling screen danced to "Play that Funky Music White Boy"

Then we started gettng some kewl light effects. It looked a lot like Vis_geiss for Winamp, only bigger, and on the ceiling.

And the disco music continued.

We found this funny. The big strip club kept flashing "Comdex 2002" on the screen. On the cab ride back, I noticed that EVERY strip club had a "Welcome Comdex" sign somewhere. Hrm.. Nerds and strip clubs.. who knew?

My roommate wanted a picture of a real Vegas prostitute. This was as close as I could find.
